About

Hi! My name’s Joseph and I’m the woodwork instructor at Rivelin Organic Crafts.

In 2021 I started making a wooden sword, and I taught two children how to do the same. Then they asked to make an axe, a spear, a shield…

Fast forward and now Rivelin Organic Crafts has a full time schedule providing non-formal educational opportunities all year round. It’s been quite a journey.

HOME EDUCATION I launched ROC to cater to the increasing demand from home-educating families in Sheffield who wanted exciting and engaging educational activities to run side-by-side with their children’s educational schedule.

EDUCATIONAL ETHOS Since the beginning, my attitude towards teaching has always been to provide something the children want to learn. In my mind, this is one of the great advantages of non-formal education; to be able to provide a tailormade experience. Whilst it might not be for everyone, for certain children our sessions are designed to be a dream come true.

MY BACKGROUND My personal background is in international youth work. For a number of years I’ve worked within the EU’s Erasmus+ Programme supporting education, training and youth work in Europe. It has been a unique experience to develop myself both personally and professionally, and directly contributes to the skillset I apply daily during our sessions.

Non formal education is all organised education activities that are outside the formally established system. It can work separately or within a larger activity, according to the participants or learning goals.
